Shanxi Province is located in North China, bordered by Hebei Province to the east, Henan Province to the south, Shaanxi Province to the west, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to the north. The province’s name, “Shanxi,” means “West of the Mountains,” referring to its location west of the Taihang Mountains, which separate it from Hebei Province.
The terrain of Shanxi is diverse, with mountainous regions in the east, center, and west, including parts of the Taihang and Lüliang mountain ranges. The central area of the province is a plateau known as the Shanxi Plateau, which features loess soil and is part of the larger Loess Plateau of China. By Air:
- The Taiyuan Wusu International Airport (TYN) is the main airport in Shanxi Province, located about 15 kilometers southeast of Taiyuan, the provincial capital. It offers domestic flights to major cities across China and some international flights.
- Other airports in Shanxi include Datong Yungang Airport (DAT) and Changzhi Wangcun Airport (CIH), which mainly serve domestic routes.
With Train:
- Shanxi is well-connected by China’s extensive railway network. High-speed trains run to Taiyuan from major cities like Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai.
- For those interested in visiting the ancient city of Pingyao, there are high-speed trains available from Taiyuan and other cities.
- Datong, another popular tourist destination in Shanxi, is also accessible by train from Beijing and other locations.
By Road:
- Long-distance buses connect Shanxi with neighboring provinces. Bus services are available from Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and other regions to various cities within Shanxi.
- Travelers can also opt to drive into Shanxi via expressways such as the Beijing-Kunming (G5), Datong-Yuncheng (G55), and Taiyuan-Yuncheng (G65) Expressways.
Once in the province, public transportation options like buses and taxis are available for getting around, and renting a car is also an option for more flexibility, especially when exploring remote areas or multiple attractions spread across the province.
