Geographical position and Climate of Ningxia
Ningxia, officially the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (NHAR), is located in the northwest part of the People’s Republic of China. It is bounded by Shaanxi to the east, Gansu to the south and west, and Inner Mongolia to the north and has an area of around 66,400 square kilometers.
Ningxia is situated at the upper reaches of the Yellow River, featuring three main topographical features: the Yellow River Irrigation Plains, the Ningxia Plains, and the Helan Mountains. The region lies at an elevation that varies from 1,100 to 2,000 meters above sea level.
The climate in Ningria is characterized as continental and semi-arid with distinct seasons. Winters are cold and dry, while summers are hot and occasionally rainy. Spring and autumn are short compared to winter and summer. The average annual rainfall ranges from 190 to 700 millimeters, mostly falling between June and September. Due to its position, Ningxia also experiences significant evaporation which influences the overall aridity of the region.
