Geographical position and Climate of Oaxaca

Oaxaca is located in the southeastern region of Mexico. It is bordered by the states of Guerrero to the west, Puebla to the northwest, Veracruz to the north, and Chiapas to the east. To the south, state has a significant coastline along the Pacific Ocean.

Oaxaca’s climate is highly varied due to its topography, which includes mountains, valleys, and coastal areas. The state can be divided into three main climatic zones: Coastal Areas – tropical climate, Central Valleys – temperate climate and Mountainous Regions – cooler climate.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the State is during the dry season, which typically runs from October to May. During these months, the weather is pleasant with minimal rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the region’s cultural sites.

Additionally, visiting during late October and early November allows you to experience the vibrant festivities of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), a significant cultural event in the state. Another great time is during the Guelaguetza festival, usually held in July, which showcases Oaxaca’s rich indigenous cultures and traditions through dance, music, and regional cuisine.

By Air:

  • The Xoxocotlán International Airport (OAX) in Oaxaca City is the main gateway by air. It offers domestic flights from major cities in Mexico and some international connections.

By Road:

  • Long-distance buses connect the state with Mexico City and other major cities. The ADO bus company is one of the most popular for this route.
  • Driving to Oaxaca is another option, with well-maintained highways such as the 135D toll road from Mexico City.

With Bus:

  • First-class and second-class buses are available for intercity travel within the State, providing access to coastal areas and other attractions.
